The problem: POUT is living true to its name of Political Operations Under Threat; at the last minute we have lost our two core actresses and we have two shows booked as part of the Templeworks festival (16th and 17th July): we need two fantastic actors/actresses to join on board the POUT express and help us get this show on the road!
The show: Julie is a burley northern mother who has just lost her son to the war in Afghanistan (this is the political backdrop to the piece); Julie lives in a world of fragmented memories and has a boiling pot of anger waiting to spill out over her victims. We meet Julie in the midst of a breakdown, she has lost her grasp on reality and constructed a world of grief that consumes her and manifests in a darkly comic relationship she builds with a neighbor she has kidnapped. As a reflection of the current state of the conflict in Afghanistan we see Julie employ murky tactics to keep her victim from falling apart. Julie invites us into her world, mixing dark comedy, physical theatre and fantasy, Julie and her memories of Richard embark upon a surreal journey where the reality of war frames Julie’s progressive detachment with reality.
So far: The piece has already been through a stage of re-development after a work-in-progress showing at Yorkshire Dance in front of Red Ladder (in March); with Rod Dixons feedback we have managed to capture the essential gritty elements of the show and turn it into something quite unique. We also have a designer on board, currently working on the aesthetics of the set and costume, we are aiming for a slick, Kill Bill meets Bansky look and we are very close to achieving this!
The solution: SO, what we need is commitment, we need two performers to commit to performing on the 16th and 17th of July; I am open to male or female performers to play Julie (obviously if it were a male lead then you would need to be familiar with playing a female role). And, we need a male or female to play Julie’s victim (this is a silent part, but it is physically intensive). We also need you to commit to at least 90% of the following rehearsal slots (although we may be able to negotiate some for the right duo) – the auditions will be held on the 5th July, please see details below:
